With our Heavy Duty cardboard packaging, it will be easier for you to achieve your environmental goals – without compromising on quality.
Sustainability has become a top priority for our customers – and it’s only becoming more important. That’s why we help our customers choose a packaging solution that not only protects their product in the best possible way but also protects the environment.
When our customers replace wood or plywood with Heavy Duty corrugated cardboard, they can immediately see a significant CO2 reduction in their own reporting. This has the positive effect that, as a FARUSA customer, you can reduce your recorded consumption across the entire product lifecycle. (Under is the “Hotspot” analysis)
LOWER CO2 FOOTPRINT
The choice of transport packaging often comes down to cardboard boxes, plywood crates, or pallet collars. That’s why in 2024, we commissioned a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA – see image above) of these three products, carried out by the screening company MÅLBAR.
The three export packaging solutions assessed are:
A Heavy Duty Corrugated Box
A plywood box
A box consisting of 3 pallet frames
All three solutions have the same dimensions (1200 x 800 x 600 mm).
When comparing the packaging solutions after just one use, the results are as follows:
Heavy Duty corrugated box: 50 kg CO2eq
Plywood box: 170 kg CO2eq
3 pallet frames: 143 kg CO2eq
The table (under) also shows the CO₂ footprint per use if the packaging is reused up to 20 times. Even if a cardboard box is only reused five times, its CO₂ footprint per use is still significantly lower than that of both plywood crates and pallet collars reused 20 times.
REUSE AND RECYCLING
If a product can only be used once, it’s difficult to integrate it into an environmentally friendly production setup. That’s why we’ve developed a product so strong that it can be reused many times. In fact, several of our customers have reused our products for over 10 years!
However, a cardboard box may not always be reusable that many times, which is why it’s a big advantage that our products can be 100% recycled and turned into new corrigated cardboard packaging, after end of use.
FSC-CERTIFIED CARDBOARD HAS A SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER CO2 FOOTPRINT
The figures above are based on standard, virgin Heavy Duty corrugated cardboard, but an even more environmentally friendly solution is possible by using HD material with a portion of recycled cardboard and/or FSC-certified cardboard.
For example, the life cycle analysis shows that by choosing FSC-certified cardboard, the CO₂ footprint can be reduced by an additional 30%. This means a one-time-use FSC-certified Heavy Duty box can go from 50 to 35 kg CO₂eq.
ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY ENERGY SOURCES
In addition to focusing on making products that can be reused and recycled, we’re continuously taking small steps to make a difference. All of the energy we use for both production and heating comes from renewable energy sources.
As a result, we can also present an energy certificate from our energy supplier.
We are also inspired by the UN Sustainable Development Goals – especially those concerning responsible consumption and production.
