What is Heavy-Duty corrugated cardboard?

NO!!!! Corrugated cardboard is not just cardboard – and no, corrugated cardboard is not just corrugated cardboard!!!!

One of the things we often encounter in the field is the assumption that corrugated cardboard has no strength.
We understand the assumption – but we don’t accept the premise.
You’re probably thinking of the kind of corrugated cardboard you find in the hardware store, like a moving box – and we get that.
But that’s far from the type of corrugated cardboard we produce.

In our blog post, we even dared to place a Mercedes E-Class on top of one of our “moving boxes”…

Heavy-Duty Corrugated Cardboard is a specially reinforced type of corrugated board designed to withstand heavy loads, impacts, and harsh transport conditions.

It is typically used for industrial applications, export packaging, and the shipping of heavy or fragile goods.

With its extra strength and durability, Heavy-Duty cardboard offers enhanced protection throughout the entire logistics chain – making it a reliable choice when standard packaging simply isn’t enough.

Let’s take a quick overview:

More Layers Often Means Double or Triple Wall Corrugated Board

Standard corrugated board

Has one flute and is called single wall.

Heavy-Duty corrugated board

Is commonly used with:

  • Double wall (two flutes and three liners)
  • Triple wall (three flutes and four liners)

This construction provides increased strength, rigidity, and resistance to pressure.

Higher Grammage and Thickness

Typically made with paper qualities ranging from 200–440 g/m² per layer

HD board often weighs between 1100 – 2500 g/m² total

Total thickness can range from 7–15 mm or more, depending on the number and type of flutes

Strong Flute Profiles

Standard corrugated board usually uses profiles like C or BC.

Heavy-Duty corrugated often uses AA or AAA profiles

Triple wall with AAA fluting is used for extremely heavy or demanding loads

This makes Heavy-Duty corrugated board ideal for secure, durable, and sustainable industrial packaging.

High Compression Strength and Puncture Resistance
Heavy-Duty corrugated board is ideal for stacking heavy items.
It can withstand both vertical pressure and point loads.

It is typically characterized by high values in: Edge Crush Test (ECT)

And Burst Strength

Resistance to Moisture and Climate Changes
Our Heavy-Duty grades are all bonded with water-resistant glue.

Our strongest grade is equipped with a 440 g/m² Hydrokraftliner,
both on the inside and outside, making it especially suited for

Overseas shipments, All-weather transport

⚠️ None of the board grades are designed for long-term outdoor storage.

Here are 4 benefits of choosing Heavy Duty corrugated cardboard:

Advantages

  • Extreme strength and durability
  • Recyclable and environmentally friendly (compared to wood and plastic crates)
  • Lighter and more cost-effective than wooden packaging
  • Flexible in design and sizing

Why your packaging supplier should be part of your logistics strategy

When packaging and the supply chain work together, the best results emerge.
In many companies, packaging is still seen as an isolated purchasing task. You order, pack, and ship.
